Ann Lawrence hosted a small, elegant early-evening “Safari Party” at the Las Campanas Clubhouse on Saturday, April 17th. The event was a celebration of her 2-month African safari, which took place in July and August of 2004. Donald Young, Ann’s private luxury safari guide, was on hand to chronicle the trip with a colorful slide show of their trek through Kenya and Rwanda. Ann’s African sojourn also included a 3-week visit to Ghana where she worked on a community project with Global Volunteers.
The ultimate destination for the group was the Uaso Nyiro River in the northern frontier of Kenya. It was there in the Samburu Reserve that Ann’s group participated in a significant historical event the excavation of a mysterious fossilized human skeleton originally discovered by Young in 1991. Dr. Richard Leakey visited the site in June 2003 and estimated the fossil to be between 100,000 and 300,000 years old. The archaeological team of Dr. Nasser Malit and Dr. Louise Leakey joined Young and the Lawrence party for the excavation last summer.
The female skeleton they unearthed was named “Samburu Eve” and now resides in The National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi. Read more about Samburu Eve at - Don Young Safaris
In addition to the hauntingly beautiful slide show of Ann’s amazing trip, guests at the reception were entertained by Young’s commentary which included a spirited 10-minute tale of a dancing bull elephant that came into his camp one night. Don is QUITE the storyteller! After the slide show, guests sipped champagne and nibbled hors d’oeuvres while enjoying a display of artifacts and collectibles from Ann’s African travels.
